Biography

Spanish/Asturian Descent.

Jacqueline spent her very early childhood in the villages of the alps of Northern Spain (Picos de Europa), arriving in Australia at the age of five to spend the rest of her childhood years growing up in the remote world heritage listed Jenolan Caves, the most spectacular limestone cave system in Australia. As one of very few children who ever lived there in history, she had “the world's best fairytale backyard” only metres away from a prehistoric subterranean gallery which the rest of the world came to visit.

Her naivety led her to diverse life experiences; from becoming a kangaroo shooter's wife in the Australian outback to being nursed by the Fijian people on a remote island of the South Pacific. Much of her work has been influenced by her inner spirit and being a surviver of life threatening illness, as well as living in such childhood isolation where creating was a daily occurrence out of necessity and intuition. Her imagination and inspiration grew to encompass a profound passion for understanding humanity, life and the universe at large, where there are no limitations or barriers.

Her works reflect the delicate balance of life and death and she exercises an acute sensitivity to the world with her inner gift of creativity in sometimes experimental forms. For her, life is art in whatever form it takes and hence she uses a variety of media: painting, sculpture, photography, earth and experimental media.

“In this century we are flying much faster than Leonardo da Vinci's flying man with bird wings. In this very strange world, we the artists, ask that our fellow friends be open minded about all possibilities in art, as each century bears new signatures and possibilities”

-- Jacqueline Martin Miller de Velasco
